In the end of October in Wrocław took a place fifth edition of workshops “Architecture for All”. During a week of working in a groups (5-6) students redesigned selected places in Wrocław so it become more friendly for people with different kinds of disability, because disability is not just moving on a wheelchair.
The idea of universal design allows to create a friendly environment for all of its users. The people with a disabilities apart moving on a wheelchair or using crutches are also blind, visually impaired people, pregnant women, elderly and even a child. Disability can be permanent or temporary – when for example you break your leg or twist an ankle.
“The main aim of our project is to open a debate with people with disabilities. We would like to hear about the problems of disabled people, their everyday life, their dreams and the architectural barriers that prevent them from freely move around the city and buildings.
The most important experience, that we would like to provide, is the incarnation to the skin of a person with a disability. Every year we organize “Transport Action” on which we sit in a wheelchair or cover our eyes or ears. This allows us to feel what it means to use steep ramp, high steps, paving stones or a low barrier. ” (from arch4all5.wordpress.com )
